Leadership Coursework
UNC Kenan-Flager’s Online MBA program is designed to help you develop a strong base of leadership knowledge through both coursework and team-based projects.
As part of the core MBA curriculum, you’ll take Leading and Managing, where you’ll apply concepts from sociology, psychology and organizational science to real-world leadership scenarios, and Responsible Leadership, where you’ll explore important and often sensitive issues related to leadership.
A choice of more than 40 elective courses and Summit tracks further bolster your knowledge in key areas, including negotiations, organization and culture, people management and decision-making. In addition, you’ll build robust skills in strategic thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and technology and AI, which you can use to lead and inspire others in your sphere of influence.
You’ll also explore, build and practice your networking skills, helping you build relationships that you’ll leverage throughout your career. These strengths will increase your competence—and confidence—in areas critical to your long-term success.
Leading with Impact Series
In addition to coursework, Online MBA students have access to cutting-edge leadership programming that addresses the key skills employers expect from future leaders. This practical, hands-on experience will change the way you approach your work, making you a more valuable candidate for promotion within your current organization or as you change roles.

In-Person, Half-Day Workshops
These sessions, led by world-class experts and leadership experts, are held periodically when students are on campus and focus on important leadership topics. They are conveniently scheduled the day before domestic Summits. Previous sessions have covered areas such as leveraging polarities, learning agility, leading change, influence and trust.
In-Person Leadership Sessions
These sessions bridge theory and practice, exposing you to business experts and lessons that expand your leadership toolkit. Open to all Online MBA and Executive MBA students, delivery may include hands-on workshops, alumni panel discussions, interactive experiences and simulations.
Virtual Sessions
Several times a year, Online MBA and Executive MBA students can participate in virtual leadership sessions as part of the Leading with Impact series. These sessions address current topics, business challenges and research, and provide practical insights you’ll leverage immediately in your work.
Personalized Career Coaching
One-on-one and small-group sessions with seasoned career coaches will help you reflect on the leadership skills and knowledge you’ve gained, and how to best tap into it to meet your individual career goals.
These sessions address tactical topics such as maximizing LinkedIn usage, and also include resume reviews and/or mock interviews. Your career coach can even assist you in designing a job search that aligns all of your goals, after reflecting on and discussing your interests, values and career goals.
Leadership Academy Certificate
Online MBA students can earn the Leadership Academy Certificate—an additional formal credential that highlights their leadership excellence. The certificate requires no extra classes, as its coursework is integrated into the MBA program and counts toward both credentials.
Designed for those aiming to excel in senior-level roles, the certificate is built on the core MBA curriculum and is rooted in UNC Kenan-Flagler’s values of impact, innovation, inclusion and integrity.
