MBA@UNC Class of 2016
After putting career advancement on the back burner to focus on raising her daughter, Amy Foster decided it was time to refocus her energy on her career in the technology sector. She is now ready to transition back to a role in management, and MBA@UNC is helping her develop the skills to do it. This is her story.
"I hadn't thought about getting an MBA until I decided I wanted a career shift—I wanted to see the other side of the house."
Exploring a New Career Path
As a professional with years of experience in the technology sector, Amy Foster worked her way to a management position. She made the decision to temporarily step back from her management role to focus more on raising her young daughter but is now ready to lead once again. Amy brought a wealth of technical knowledge to the MBA@UNC classroom, and her time in the program has helped her supplement that with additional leadership and management skills.
"Having an engineering background, I never had a finance class; I never took marketing; I never took economics in college. So I really wanted a degree that would help me broaden my skills and broaden my horizons."
Balancing Education and Parenthood
While her workload is demanding, Amy has been able to fit her degree into her busy life. Though the challenge is daunting, it is important to Amy not only to make a better life for her daughter, but to show her that there really are no limits. As a mid-career single mother, working full time and raising her daughter alone, Amy also leans on her classmates and instructors for support along the way.
"There are days where I feel like a failure, and there are days when I feel like ‘I did it—I can't believe I got through all that!' The support I get is amazing. I have leaned on my classmates, and they've leaned on me. I've attended office hours and worked with professors to change course times when I had conflicts. It really feels like we're all in this together."
Committing to a Life-Changing Decision
From newly developed skills to deep personal and professional connections, MBA@UNC has helped Amy completely redefine her career path. During her time in the program, she has formed real friendships, improved her time management abilities, developed critical leadership skills and managed to keep her daughter at the top of her priority list—all while earning a world-class MBA.
"There's no perfect time. I think you have to just decide. If it's something you want to do, you just have to do it. Where it will take me, I don't know, but it will definitely open some doors. It's hard, it's a lot of work and my life is chaos right now, but I love it. I wouldn't do it any other way."
