A Customized Approach to Career Services
MBA@UNC offers an enriching, fast-paced curriculum that helps students develop in-demand business skills at any point in their careers. With a diverse student body of professionals working across a range of job roles and industries, MBA@UNC goes beyond a one-size-fits-all approach to career services. To meet each student’s individual needs, MBA@UNC provides customized career development, which has become a true hallmark of the program.
“We have a very individualized approach, and we offer an unlimited amount of one-on-one coaching and consultation to help you manage your career." -Shawnice Meador, Director of career management and leadership development at MBA@UNC
Shawnice meets with each student individually to offer personalized guidance. “We can help you think about what you’re trying to achieve and make sure you’re taking advantage of all the great resources that are at your fingertips,” Meador said.
The attention to individual students begins from the moment they enroll at MBA@UNC. Students are afforded a personalized consultation via the school’s unique online platform. Meador meets with students one-on-one as they progress through the program, which allows her to assess what they need during their time at MBA@UNC in order to meet their goals. She asks herself what students are looking for in the experience—whether it’s to advance in their current careers or to develop the skills they need to start in a new role or industry—and then she helps them develop a plan to achieve those goals. This hands-on approach provides significant benefits by providing customized career expertise tailored to each individual’s unique background, and it fosters a close sense of connection between students, staff and faculty.
Powerful Networking Opportunities
In addition to personalized meetings with career services, MBA@UNC also offers a variety of networking opportunities. Through dynamic, web-based platforms, students from all over the world come together in a virtual classroom to learn, share insights and network face to face. “It has been an incredible experience to get exposure to the talented people that we have in our program,” Meador said. “I have met people who have lived in different places around the world. They’re all coming together for one sole purpose of continuing to help themselves learn, develop, grow and be successful. That part alone has been an incredible learning opportunity for myself in particular.”
One of the main points Meador emphasized is that the finished degree is not necessarily what carries the most weight in terms of career development post-graduation. Rather, the diverse experience and the chance to collaborate with so many new people are what carry the real value. “Our students are smart,” Meador said. “They’re savvy. They’re successful. They wouldn’t be where they are right now if they didn’t have those nuts and bolts already with them. I think an MBA experience gives them an opportunity to gain new insights to take them to the next level of their careers.”
