Welcome to UNC and the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered in 1789 and opened its doors in 1795 as the nation’s first public university. Situated in the beautiful college town of Chapel Hill, NC, UNC has earned a reputation as one of the best universities in the world.

In addition to offering five Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programs, UNC Kenan-Flagler offers a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Master of Accounting, Ph.D., a business certificate program, as well as many executive development programs.

Established in 1919 as the Department of Commerce of UNC Chapel Hill’s College of Arts, the School was renamed the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1991 to honor two prominent American business families and benefactors of the School: philanthropist Mary Lily Kenan Flagler and her husband, Henry Morrison Flagler. The renaming was in recognition of a generous gift from Frank Hawkins Kenan, another Kenan family member and benefactor of the School’s Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.

In 1997, the McColl Building opened at UNC Kenan-Flagler to complete today’s campus. In 2007, the fifth floor was expanded due to growth, and the common area on the first floor devoted to students was renovated. With 230,000 square feet , Hugh McColl’s namesake has more than tripled the space that the school occupied at Carroll Hall.

UNC Kenan-Flagler is located in Chapel Hill, which is part of the Research Triangle, commonly referred to as “The Triangle.” The Triangle is anchored at its 3 corners by the cities of Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh. More than 1.7 million people live in the area, which is also home to Research Triangle Park, where numerous high-tech companies and enterprises are located. Although the name is now used to refer to the geographic region, “The Triangle” originally referred to the universities, whose research facilities, and the educated workforce they provide, have historically served as a major attraction for businesses located in the region.
