About the AACSB and Accreditation
The AACSB was founded in 1916 to help business schools connect with each other in hopes of broadening networks and creating forums for discussion of industry-related issues. Three years after its establishment, the AACSB adopted its first set of Accreditation Standards, guidelines that sought to improve the quality of business education.
The MBA accreditation process is a non-compulsory, comprehensive review of an institution's business education standard. Because the business world is incredibly dynamic, the AACSB continuously updates its standards to reflect the transforming needs of businesses and business students. The AACSB currently breaks down its Business Accreditation Standards into three overarching categories: Strategic Management, Participants and Assurance of Learning. Strategic Management Standards consider how a school focuses its efforts and resources towards its mission statement, and how successful it is to that end. Participants Standards gauge the qualifications of faculty members and characteristics of the student body. The Assurance of Learning Standards evaluates the educational expectations the institution demands of its students and its ability to assure these expectations are achieved.
In addition to being an AACSB online MBA program, the MBA@UNC is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), an agency which accredits degree-granting institutions in the Southern United States.
What Does Accreditation Mean to Students?
AACSB accreditation is an excellent criterion for students to discern which online MBA program can provide them with the best education. Since accreditation is voluntary, institutions that seek it do so because they believe in the value of the educational experience they offer. An AACSB accreditation signals to prospective students that the online MBA program they are considering has passed a thorough an extensive evaluation and is truly a worthwhile investment.
