Johannesburg, March 2017
South Africa’s turbulent political and economic history have produced one of the world’s most unique and complex business landscapes. In March 2017, MBA@UNC students will travel to Johannesburg to explore the challenges and opportunities facing Africa’s largest economy.
During the immersion, students will meet with top executives from the region to explore how South Africa has grown and matured as a nation and an economy since Apartheid fell nearly 20 years ago. Students will learn how South Africa fits into the global market and discover how businesses navigate the challenges that arise in a country with 11 official languages, the largest HIV epidemic in the world and 25 percent of the population living in poverty.
Immersion Extension: Cape Town
At the conclusion of the immersion in Johannesburg, students may opt to participate in an immersion extension. Students in the extension program will fly from Johannesburg to Cape Town on the Tuesday following the immersion, where they will spend the remainder of the week.
The extension will be led by Professor Dave Roberts and will take a holistic approach to looking at business development in the country and how companies intersect with domestic and global markets. Topics will include:
- Is South Africa the land of “unrealizable opportunity”?
- Entrepreneurship as an “escape” from hardship
- Making “lemonade” from insufficient infrastructure: the growth of “leap-frogging” technologies
